ART STYLE
My artwork is a combination of collage and mosaic art with the material and medium coming from collage but the role those materials play in the larger piece being more like tiles in a mosaic. My work varies in size, usually only limited by the amount of material I have access to.
THE PROCESS
My pieces come together from magazines, books, or anything I can get my hands on as I cut or tear then adhere them to a wooden base. Usually I create a detailed plan of the overall piece on paper that I can then project through my material using a light table. This lets me be very deliberate in how I make each cut and how a material might best be positioned to benefit the final piece.
WHY COLLAGE?
Collage specifically is interesting to me because of the potential in it. With an entire world of existing text, symbols and imagery it's hard not to be tempted by the sheer amount of complexity and meaning you can inject into one piece.
At the same time it creates random beauty even without much input; a gradient that happens to line up perfectly with a fading light source or a line of text that runs the length of a finger. These happenstances can make the process of creating a piece akin to walking through a forest, only taking photos only of the most interesting things you find.
With every piece I aim to improve in both those designed and selective elements of my art and hope you too can see them.
